Whenever I get a chance to make cakes for family, I always use it as an opportunity to create something challenging. Mainly because there is no pressure if I mess up or need to change the design.

Last year my nephew had a construction themed birthday party and the behind the scenes blog post has been on my list of things to do since then (my goodness where has the time gone?!). Well better late than never 🙂

A hanging type cake had always been on my cake wish list so I thought I’d give it a try. Continue on below to see some behind the scenes photos of how the cake came together…

Usually when I make anything new for the first time, I always weight test the structure first. There is a 7kg bucket of fondant inside the bag.

Getting the cake onto the structure… I used rice krispies for the middle section because we didn’t need that much cake.

And here are some more photos from the rest of the table and special guests – Flynn and Rufus… enjoy!

I also bought a matching construction vest and hat for my nephew but unfortunately he flat out refused to wear it! Oh well!

Actually it wasn’t too expensive (in my opinion 🙂 ). All the materials were easily found at my local hardware store.

Try your local hardware store, they have lots of pieces for creating this structure. Im not sure what the names of all the pieces are but if you bring in a photo, someone should be able to point you to the items you need 🙂

          All the best with it!
